Kindle Services Recommendation List
This probably requires a little explanation.
I wrote an article for Sarah Hoyt on the Economics of Indie Publishing. A number of people asked me for contact details for editors and cover designers I had used myself (and could therefore vouch for). I drew up a list of everyone I had worked with over the years, then asked if they wanted to be included. Everyone listed below is definitely worth the money I paid them.
I’m not going to include anyone I cannot vouch for, so please don’t ask to be included (but I’m always happy to make new contacts.)

Speciality (In Own Words): Copy editing/proofreading, identification of inconsistencies. Through a combination of track changes and comments I correct typos and erroneous auto-completes and use comments to note inconsistencies in the plot, characterisation and setting. I also point out anything that is awkward to read and sentences/concepts that I love. Fantasy is my preferred genre. I can work in others but I won't be able to verify your originality.
Rates: £3 per 1000 words for the first 150k, by negotiation for longer works.
Name: Barb Caffrey
Speciality (In Own Words): I do conceptual editing (also known as developmental editing), copy-editing, proofreading and continuity reading. Usually I'm called upon to do more than one of these at a time; most of the time I get called upon to do conceptual editing and copy-editing/continuity reading. If you hire me, I'll give you a five-page sample copy-edit, just so you can see what I do and whether or not you think we can work together.
Rates: .01/word for copy-editing and/or continuity reading, .01/word plus negotiated fee for conceptual editing (I need to see what you have before we can discuss it), .0075/word for proofreading. (Some sort of start fee is required before I start to work for you.)
Name: Christine Amsden
Speciality (In Own Words): conceptual editing, developmental editing, mentoring
Rates: $20 per hour (flat rate bids are available based on type of editing desired and the state of the manuscript)
Name: Robert Goerlich
Speciality (In Own Words): I specialize in science fiction, historical fiction, alternate history, fantasy, history, biographies, adventure, thrillers and popular science. I will check spelling, punctuation, grammar, usage, awkward or inappropriate wording, redundancies, confusing terms, readability, consistency and tense issues. On request, I will translate British English to American English. Correction notes can be returned in a separate document or I will return your eBook commented and marked up with Microsoft Word tracking or Google Docs suggesting.
An entire eBook is US$.004
per word for five thousand words per day. A hundred thousand word book would be
US$400.00 and done in twenty days. I would hope to do the proofreading in less
than half that time, but sometimes real life intrudes. When the book is broken
up into chapters delivered separately or groups of chapters the rate is US$.005
per word figuring two days for ten thousand words.
